Course Instructions

Communication of homework assignments, schedules, and other informations will be done via this web site as well as in the lecture. This page can be reached from the instructor's homepage, from the Physics department home page (http://www.physics.sunysb.edu) and from the university Instructional Computing Course infomation page.

Homework

Homework will be assigned each week. It will be collected for grading in the following week. Homework assignments will be posted on the web. Although cooperative learning is encouraged, you are required to solve the problems on your own and to consult others only after giving it a serious try yourself. The final calculations and solutions have to be done by you alone. Copied homework will count as zero. Late homework will be accepted only for a week period after the due date with a 50% penalty.

Examinations

There will be two mid-term examinations during the semester, and a final 2.5-hour exam during finals week. There will be no make-up exams.

Exam Date
Midterm I Feb. 27, W 3:50-5:10pm
Midterm II Apr. 9, W 3:50-5:10pm
Final May 14, W 5:00-7:30pm

Calculators

It is strongly recommended that all students to carry a calculator (see qpproved calculator list below) when attending lectures as well as taking exams. Throughout the semester, there will be numerous example calculations done during the lectures using a calculator, and most of the exam problems will require using a calculator.

How the Approved Calculator List was Formed

While an equation sheet will be provided during the exam, we must take precautions against students who might be tempted to store various information including homework solutions into an alphanumeric calculator (as opposed to a purely numeric calculator). As such, alphanumeric calculators (includes virtually all graphing calculators) are forbidden in the exam.

Below is a list of approved calculators. This list was formulated by going to the web sites of the companies suggested by students and searching their presently available models for those calculators that are capable enough (trig functions, log, square root) but do not store alphanumerics. Older models might also be acceptable and will have to be cleared by the exam proctors.

Approved Calculator List

Prices are either provided by the manufacturer or were found by a simple web search. You might do better in your shopping.

Texas Instruments TI 30XA $9.99
TI 30X IIB $15.99
TI 30X IIS $14.87

Casio FX-115 $14.99
FX-250 $7.99
FX-260 $8.99
FX-300 $9.99

Your final grade will be determined as follows:
Homework 30%; Two Midterm Examinations 20% each; Final Examination 30%; Attandance and Participation at Teacher's discretion

Special Notes:

Any excuses (medical or otherwise) are to be documented, and discussed with the instructors in a timely manner.
