DUSEL in brief DUSEL in brief What it is: The Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory is a proposed underground national lab focusing on particle and high-energy physics research to help untangle the mysteries of dark matter, dark energy and other mysteries of the universe. The lab also would host experiments related to microbiology, geology and geological engineering. University of Colorado scientists are involved in the physics and geology portions of the proposal and are leading the microbiology proposal effort. Where it is: Climax Molybdenum's Henderson Mine near Empire is one of two semifinalists for the lab. The other is the former Homestake gold mine in South Dakota. What's new: Backers of both sites will submit final proposals to the National Science Foundation by Jan. 9.
