Underground Guide
- Safety Issues:
- Enter the mine only by mine car and only accompanied by an SK collaborator. Do not attempt to walk into or out of the mine!
- When underground, stay in the lab area (the parking lot, the lab complex, and the toilet area).
- Always wear a hardhat when underground and not in the SK control room.
- Always carry a light when not in the SK lab.
- Obey the blasting rules. These will be explained to you.
- Obey directions from miners and senior SK people

- Wear goggles when working with PMTs
- Where gloves and other protective clothing when needed
- Use a safety rope:
- In the gondolas
- When working near an opening to the detector
- Whenever a fall is possible
- When directed to do so
- Always be conscious of where you are and think before you act. The detector and the mine can be dangerous places.
- Lab Etiquette:
- Two pairs of clean, white shoes are needed:
- Lab shoes and
- Detector shoes
- Obey the shoe rules:
- Change shoes when entering or leaving the lab, Kenkuyto, or toilet
- Change shoes when entering or leaving a designated clean area
- Change shoes when directed to do so
- No smoking in the lab or Kenkuyto
- No smoking in the mine cars
- No disruptive noise or behavior
- Follow the trash and battery disposal rules
- Detector Clean Area Rules:
- Only detector shoes are to be worn in the detector
- Shoe covers can be a substitute for short trips into clean areas.
- Tyvek suites are to be worn in the detector.
- No food or other non essentials may be taken into the detector
- Lunch is eaten in the lounge behind the control room:
- Order a bento (in advance) from the dorm.
- Do not take a dorm bento unless you ordered one and see you find your name on the daily bento list
- Or, bring your lunch
- Clean up after eating
- If you drink coffee, contribute to the coffee fund.
