Underground Guide

  1. Safety Issues:
    1. Enter the mine only by mine car and only accompanied by an SK collaborator. Do not attempt to walk into or out of the mine!
    2. When underground, stay in the lab area (the parking lot, the lab complex, and the toilet area).
    3. Always wear a hardhat when underground and not in the SK control room.
    4. Always carry a light when not in the SK lab.
    5. Obey the blasting rules. These will be explained to you.
    6. Obey directions from miners and senior SK people .
    7. Wear goggles when working with PMTs
    8. Where gloves and other protective clothing when needed
    9. Use a safety rope:
      1. In the gondolas
      2. When working near an opening to the detector
      3. Whenever a fall is possible
      4. When directed to do so
    10. Always be conscious of where you are and think before you act. The detector and the mine can be dangerous places.

  2. Lab Etiquette:
    1. Two pairs of clean, white shoes are needed:
      1. Lab shoes and
      2. Detector shoes
    2. Obey the shoe rules:
      1. Change shoes when entering or leaving the lab, Kenkuyto, or toilet
      2. Change shoes when entering or leaving a designated clean area
      3. Change shoes when directed to do so
    3. No smoking in the lab or Kenkuyto
    4. No smoking in the mine cars
    5. No disruptive noise or behavior
    6. Follow the trash and battery disposal rules

  3. Detector Clean Area Rules:
    1. Only detector shoes are to be worn in the detector
    2. Shoe covers can be a substitute for short trips into clean areas.
    3. Tyvek suites are to be worn in the detector.
    4. No food or other non essentials may be taken into the detector

  4. Lunch is eaten in the lounge behind the control room:
    1. Order a bento (in advance) from the dorm.
      1. Do not take a dorm bento unless you ordered one and see you find your name on the daily bento list
    2. Or, bring your lunch
    3. Clean up after eating
    4. If you drink coffee, contribute to the coffee fund.
